Investigating young Finnish CLIL pupils’ perceptions of foreign language use through visual narratives

Abstract This article explores how pupils in early CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) education perceive language skills and use. The participants were 25 French-medium and 16 English-medium CLIL pupils in Grade 2 (aged 8 years). They had received CLIL education since the 1st Grade. The data were visual narratives drawn by the pupils and some associated open-ended questions they answered in writing. The data were analyzed using visual and content analysis. Tutkielmani tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitä lukion ensimmäisen vuosikurssin oppilaat ajattelevat englannin kieliopista ja sen opetuksesta. Vaikka oppilaiden ja opiskelijoiden asenteita kielioppia kohtaan on tutkittu aiemminkin, nimenomaan kielioppiin kohdistuvaa tutkimusta on paljon vähemmän. Aineistona tutkimuksessani käytin opiskelijoiden itsensä tuottamia visuaalisia representaatioita kieliopista; pyysin yhden keskisuomalaisen lukion ensimmäisen vuosikurssin opiskelijoita piirtämään kieliopin siten kuin he sen näkevät. Virtual Exchange (VE) is a form of experiential learning that relies heavily on learning-by-doing and reflection. The present study draws on visual data comprising students’ perceptions of critical learning incidents presented under an imaginary magnifying glass. To complete this project-closing reflective activity, the students had to describe a critical moment that they had experienced during VE and present it in a visual form. Data was collected longitudinally, in three projects (2019, 2020, and 2021) that followed the same pedagogical design and focused on the theme of tourism. Spatial belonging is understood as a multidimensional process in which pictorial representation of the environment also plays an important role. However, various intersecting discursive and personal dimensions in the relations between images, photography and spatial belonging make researching the topic quite challenging. This article focuses on a methodology that combines photo-elicitation and visual analysis to elucidate the relations between images and spatial belonging, and to explore the ways in which the mental images created by discursive landscape imagery can affect the formation of people’s place relations and feelings of spatial belonging.
